2011 Fall Safety Training Schedule

Fall 2011 Safety Training Schedule

Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) is pleased to provide our 2011 Fall Safety Training Schedule via monthly calenders at http://www.nmsu.edu/safety/training/calendar/ehs_cal.htm (also linked at safety.nmsu.edu). During the fall semester, we expect to provide over 100 safety-related classes & instruction to over 1000 persons in an effort to help prevent injury, provide risk management, and comply with OSHA & EPA requirements. Some of the training dates are tentative to allow some schedule modification for group requests. Our site includes Google satellite images and street maps of NMSU with detailed directions (map) to the safety training facility for those unfamiliar with the campus.

Your attention is also directed to the following notes on Safety Training Requirements for new employees, Special Evening Safety Classes for busy individuals and to mention Maintenance Safety as well as Lab Safety Refresher classes scheduled during the fall semester.

Safety Training Requirements

All new regular, temporary, part-time, staff, faculty, post-doc, graduate, and student employees on main campus should observe the minimum safety training via the Employee Safety & HazCom Class. The Employee Safety class is free and is presented every other week at our training facility. The class is required under NMSU policy and is to ensure compliance with EPA and OSHA obligations for worker protection, emergency procedures and hazardous materials.

A number of staff, faculty, post-docs, graduate assistants, undergraduate employees work with hazardous materials or equipment and as such have additional training requirements beyond the Employee Safety class. Further details on training obligations for those that work in NMSU research, shops, or agricultural settings are available on the safety website (link). Individuals and/or their supervisors should register attendees via the safety class registration on the EH&S website.

Special Evening Safety Classes

EH&S will provide several evening (4:30-7pm) safety classes for student employees and others that are unable to attend during regular business hours. These include an evening Employee & HazCom Safety Class, on September 2 and an evening Laboratory Standard Class on September 23.

Maintenance Safety Classes

On September 14 and 15, EH&S will provide several 4-hr long refresher classes on maintenance safety for skilled trade employees in Facility Services departments. These classes include refresher training on: 1) Lifting safety, 2) Ladder safety, 3) Lockout Tagout: program and 4) Asbestos awareness.  Bloodborne pathogen awareness and the first three topics will be provided for maintenance employees in Housing, Auxiliary departments and at DACC on September 16. Further details and a training matrix for maintenance workers are provided on the Safety website under training.

Lab Safety Refresher Classes

In later September and mid-October we will provide several laboratory safety refresher classes to the sciences (chemistry, biology, etc), engineering, and agriculture college.  These refresher classes are to help ensure NMSU researchers comply with regulatory requirements for annual Lab Standard and Hazardous Waste training.  Please note that the refresher classes will only count as annual refresher training for those that have completed the regular Laboratory Standard and Hazardous Waste Management Safety classes. The refresher classes will not meet the initial requirements for training on those topics.  Additional details are provided via the above links and on safety.nmsu.edu.

Thanks,

David L. Shearer, Assistant Director, NMSU Environmental Health & Safety,
