1. I am a student, can I fly a small UAS (drone) at any time at NMSU?

No. UAS use on campus, outside of a controlled space or designated academic course, requires a minimum, attending the UAS workshop and a flight request.  A FAA Remote Pilot Certificate is also required if a student wishes to oversee flight operations, also known as Pilot In Command.

 

  

2. I want to fly a drone at NMSU, what are the steps?

Preparation

  • Obtain your Part 107 Certificate
  • Register your UAS/drone with the FAA through EHS&RM
  • UAS must have the proper markings on the outside
  • Apply for NMSU Insurance
  • Attend the NMSU UAS Workshop

Prior to Flight

  • Complete the steps above
  • Confirm you are insured
  • Request online for flight operations and receive approval

  

3. I am a professor and I want to fly a drone. What do I need to do?

In order for an NMSU Professor to use an UAS/drone, the professor must complete the following:

  • Obtain your Part 107 Certificate
  • Register your UAS/drone with the FAA through EHS&RM
  • UAS must have the proper markings on the outside
  • Apply for and obtain NMSU Insurance
  • Attend the NMSU UAS Workshop and pass the proficiency check flight
  • Request a flight approval

  

4. How do I request a flight approval?

Go to Crimson Connection, fill out form and attach flight operations and safety form located on the page
