1. I am a student, can I fly a small UAS (drone) at any time at NMSU?
No. UAS use on campus, outside of a controlled space or designated academic course, requires a minimum, attending the UAS workshop and a flight request. A FAA Remote Pilot Certificate is also required if a student wishes to oversee flight operations, also known as Pilot In Command.
2. I want to fly a drone at NMSU, what are the steps?
Preparation- Obtain your Part 107 Certificate
- Register your UAS/drone with the FAA through EHS&RM
- UAS must have the proper markings on the outside
- Apply for NMSU Insurance
- Attend the NMSU UAS Workshop
- Complete the steps above
- Confirm you are insured
- Request online for flight operations and receive approval
3. I am a professor and I want to fly a drone. What do I need to do?
In order for an NMSU Professor to use an UAS/drone, the professor must complete the following:- Obtain your Part 107 Certificate
- Register your UAS/drone with the FAA through EHS&RM
- UAS must have the proper markings on the outside
- Apply for and obtain NMSU Insurance
- Attend the NMSU UAS Workshop and pass the proficiency check flight
- Request a flight approval
